NewJeans: The Rising Stars of KPOP

(NEWJEANS CHARTS on X)

New jeans? No! NewJeans, the Korean Kpop girl group composed of members Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein unexpectedly debuted on July 22, 2022, with their single “Attention” without revealing any of the members nor the group’s concept. Following the release of “Attention”, they dropped two other tracks, “Cookie” and “Hype Boy”. ADOR, their company, announced an EP (Extended Play playlist) consisting of those three songs plus one other, “Hurt”, which was set to be released on August 1. Their popularity skyrocketed sky high with their debut EP, from collecting trophies from huge award shows to selling almost 1.5 million copies with their debut.

Their songs “Hype Boy” and “Attention” gathered lots of attention from not only South Korea, but globally; charting in countries around the world. After a four month break, the girls announced their first single album called, “OMG”. The single album was set to release on January 2, 2023. The album consisted of two songs, “OMG”, to be the title track, and “Ditto”, as a side track. They revealed that “Ditto” would be a pre-release to the album set to release on December 19. Their single album showed massive success, especially “Ditto”. Ditto charted at number one for ten consecutive weeks on Melon’s history, Korea’s biggest music streaming service. Not only did Ditto meet success, but OMG did as well.

NewJeans became the fastest K-pop group in history to ever have multiple songs chart like Ditto and OMG on Billboard’s Hot 100 (the weekly ranking of most trending songs in the USA). As the girls took a short break, they announced that their next album called “Get Up” would be released on July 21st. The album consisted of six tracks, “Super Shy”, “ETA”, “Cool With You”, “New Jeans”, “Get Up” and “ASAP”. “Super Shy” and “Cool With You” served as pre-released tracks released on July 7th. Super Shy gathered international attention, capturing new fans with a popular chorus dance. The album placed first on Billboard 200, selling over 125,000 album units in the US.

They were the second female group to score first place on the Billboard 200 after BLACKPINK’s album last year in September. On November 19th, the girls attended the Billboard Music Awards, performing Super Shy and OMG.  Following the performance, they bagged the award “Global K-Pop Artist”. A couple days later, they attended the MAMAs awards, South Korea’s biggest award show. They received two of their biggest awards yet, Song of the Year and Artist of the Year.

It is obvious that with these awards, their popularity is rising and they have gained global recognition. Could these rising stars be the next KPOP group to perform at Coachella following the steps of AESPA and BLACKPINK?
