Growing up, I always had a strong passion for art as it can be used to tell stories and compellingly communicate emotion. I have completed and continue to take art courses at my high school, The Wheatley School. This year, I am a student in Portfolio I. The themes behind my recent work are self-discovery, reflections, and seclusion, which I aimed to express using charcoal.
At first glance level, my work depicts a child lost on a desolate road hedged by dense trees, but there is a deeper meaning to it than meets the eye. The child carrying a bucket, the path, and the forest all represent something bigger than it seems.
Starting with the child, in this work, the child carrying a bucket symbolizes the burdens we carry, such as the weight of life experiences, emotions, and obstacles. Like the child, we all carry our “buckets” filled with the experiences and tribulations that shape us. This further pushes the narrative for the viewers, aiming to prompt them to contemplate whether the bucket holds their dreams, terrors, or hopes.
The path in my artwork represents the journey of life. It reflects our path, the decisions we make, and the experiences we encounter along the way. Much like the metaphorical “path” in the artwork, life is erratic. The moonlight further expresses this idea, which can be interpreted as our innate sense of self keeping us in the right direction. This path encourages the spectator to ponder their life journey, including the milestones yet to be achieved.
In my artwork, the forest embodies the beauty and the intricacies intertwined within a single canvas known as life. The blend that a forest provides is a beauty wrapped in danger, uncertainty fused with trials so the meaning behind every obstacle is a growth in our story. Struggles and fears are a part of life. This idea is represented by dark and deep trees whereas the immersion of comfort and beauty in the woods embraces multiplicity in life. The canvas that a forest provides advances us to compute over a time where life made a curve of the complex and the untimely.
This painting revolves around contemplation, strength, and humanity’s unique relationship with nature. This painting encourages viewers to look over their journey with an inquisitive mindset so they can embrace the unknown.
