Originally worn at nighttime to signal the end of the day, pajama pants have now transformed into a symbol representing the start of a new day. Pajama pants have become a staple in high school students’ wardrobes nationwide. At Wheatley, typical school attire has also shifted, with students adopting more casual clothing styles resembling sleepwear. Among the sea of oversized hoodies and UGG slippers, there are flannel patterns—but this trend isn’t entirely new. Over the past few years, pajamas have slowly become an essential part of Wheatley students’ everyday outfits. But are pajama pants merely a fashion trend or perhaps a bold cultural statement created by students?
Pajama pants have received harsh criticism over the years, with students often being associated with laziness and unseriousness. However, comfortable attire is a central element of Wheatley fashion through which students express their unique interests, helping define who they are. Pajama pants are certainly no exception to this theme. Students often experience stress from the immense workload they are assigned, but pajamas have been a way for students to navigate through high school. This simplistic and cozy design has united students in their struggles between balancing school and extracurricular activities. Serving as a convenient and versatile piece of clothing, this nighttime apparel has carried students through every challenge imaginable.
Nevertheless, the overly positive outlook and rising popularity of pajamas creates misunderstandings among some. Teachers frequently comment on the decline in suitable clothing for a school environment, reminiscing the old fashion trends that were considered more presentable. While one Wheatley teacher recognizes the trend, claiming, “as students enter the work world, they will probably need to shift that, and pajamas won’t be such a thing anymore,” they also stated, “I just think it matters when it comes to important days at school or presentations. That is when I think that students should dress more business-like.” This growing acceptance of pajamas has blurred the line between proper school attire and sleepwear.
Pajamas have redefined the traditional dress code at school, no longer consisting of professional and school-appropriate pieces of clothing. While jeans and leggings are less frequently seen, this new standard of attire that prioritizes comfort over formality has dominated Wheatley. Although uniforms and strictly enforced dress codes have not been a concern at Wheatley, have students been taking advantage of their freedom to dress casually?
To gain further insight in this epidemic, I interviewed one Wheatley senior who claims they wear pajamas to school at least once a week.
Q: Do you think pajamas serve a purpose beyond just being sleepwear?
A: There’s a common misconception about pajamas, with many thinking of them only as sleepwear, but I see them differently. They are not necessarily a quick one-minute lazy outfit that students put together. Pajamas are a medium of comfort that enhances students’ confidence.
Q: What is your personal experience with the pajama pants epidemic? How has seeing other students dressed this way influenced your fashion?
A: Prior to Wheatley, I never wore my pajamas to school. But after seeing other students wear their pajamas, I have been more open to expressing myself freely. I have slowly discovered my own style through exploring different means of dressing. While I still wear my pajamas to school sometimes, I have expanded my style. Pajamas have helped me develop a unique sense of fashion that reflects my values.
Q: How do you believe pajamas have fostered the growth of Wheatley students?
A: I often see students struggling in such a competitive environment, so pajamas have been a small way for students to escape this stress. For example, when my classmates wear their pajamas during class presentations, I feel like the atmosphere becomes less tense. This small symbol of courage shows that we are in this fight together.
Pajama pants have helped Wheatley students demonstrate the challenges that they experience daily. Pajamas have been able to withstand the everyday struggles of school, including tedious exams, stressful presentations, and long mornings trapped in the classroom. These red-striped flannels symbolize students’ perseverance and dedication throughout their academic journeys.
Though they are trendy and in style at the current moment, do not succumb to the peer pressure of wearing your pajamas to school just because everyone else is. We all express ourselves differently, so let your wardrobe be your decision, not your peers. After all, pajamas serve as a form of expression, paving the way for students to embrace their styles without the fear of judgment, whether by wearing jeans, sweatpants, or even shorts in the winter.
While the next Wheatley fashion trend is unknown, one thing is for sure: pajama pants are here to stay—for now. So remember: do not be afraid to make your own fashion choices. The world is your runway!
