Showdown 2025: Day Three

As Wheatley students walked down the airport runway in front of the red doors and glass doors at 8:25 AM, Day Three of Showdown Week began. Today’s theme was Anything But A Backpack Day, with several students lugging around their suitcases and transforming the building into an airport. The 100s, 200s, 300s, and 400s hallways all turned into different airport terminals, and students departed to their next period classes riding on their luggage.

Students carried their school supplies in various items that also brought the warmth of home into school, including lawn mowers, laundry baskets, and toy cars and trucks. Various other unique backpack ideas included a toilet seat, wheelchair, baby carriages, mini shopping carts, and printers. Home Depot Buckets, milk crates, and tote bags could be seen scattered around the lobby as students circled around their tables to construct their mascot.

From periods one through eight, students competed in the Build A Mascot Contest, using cardboard, paper, and other recycled materials. The Seniors created Homer Simpson with a questionable structure, who held a strawberry donut and a trophy with the slogan “Go Big or Go Home(r)”. Although constructing the Genie using rectangular pieces of cardboard posed difficulties, the Juniors managed to overcome this, creating a proud Genie holding the first place trophy and the lamp. Lightning McQueen’s pit stop crew worked hard to design him with accurate proportions, wearing the number 27 in order to represent the Sophomore class. Creating the Hulk also proved to be a challenge for the Freshmen, but they were able to craft a delicate version that resembles the character. The 8th graders also completed the task, designing all four of the Penguins of Madagascar wearing winners crowns.

The morning also started off with trivia in the auditorium, with Ms. Pace and Dr. Sarandrea asking literature-themed questions. Junior Logan Roberts proudly displayed her in-depth knowledge of different literary works, winning first place for her class. Today was also Wheeling to Wheatley Wednesday, in which students earned Showdown points for taking the bus to school in the morning. Day Three’s activities ended with the Games Contest in the commons, which took place afterschool.
