Wheatley’s annual Homecoming event was a great success as it brought the entire school district together to support Wheatley’s athletic program. A celebration which also included music, an International Food Court organized by the Cultural Initiatives Committee, and bouncy castle fun, Homecoming was the perfect way to spend a bright and beautiful Saturday day. The day’s events kicked off with Girls’ Varsity Tennis, Volleyball, and Soccer.
The Girls’ Varsity Tennis team started off the day on the right note as they grabbed a 5-2 victory over Friends Academy. With some impressive serving and net play, the girls were able to make quick work of a tough and spirited team. Following the footsteps of the Varsity Tennis team, the Girls’ Varsity Soccer team secured a win, 2-0. The girls were extremely dominant in their attacking and with a strong defense and great goalkeeping, they dismantled any opportunities to give up a goal. Unfortunately, despite a great start, the Girls’ Volleyball team wasn’t able to grab the win against Hewlett. However, they remain a threat in their conference as they hold an impressive undefeated 8-0 record in conference play.
Both the Boys’ Varsity Soccer and Varsity Football competed in the afternoon, following the girls’ games. A strong and talented squad, the Varsity Soccer team raced out to score three unanswered goals after dropping an early goal to Oyster Bay. Unluckily, the team was unable to hold onto the lead as the game ended in a draw at 3 apiece. Nonetheless, the team still remains at the top of their conference. The Varsity Football team had a slow start against Seaford, struggling in stopping a strong rushing performance from Seaford. In the second half, the Carle Place/Wheatley team was able to produce some great offense, scoring multiple touchdowns and making two two-point conversions, but it wasn’t enough to come back after a tough first half. Despite the loss, it was a fantastic effort and an exciting game.
Homecoming continues to be a wonderful way to bring the community together, and Wheatley’s athletic teams continue to showcase their talent and hard work.
