The 2024 Victoria’s Secret Runway: Body Diversity?

ABC News, Women’s Wear Daily, Good Morning America

This year, 2024, Victoria’s Secret fashion show returns after 6 years. For years, tall and skinny women have dominated the runway. Being excessively skinny has become the beauty standard in society, and many have vocalized that Victoria’s Secret runway shows perpetuate this unrealistic standard. As a result of the lack of body diversity, the brand started to face extensive criticism. This criticism has led to Victoria’s Secret rebranding and displaying different body types, as a way to be more inclusive and appeal to their displeased audience.

Women, for the most part, have spoken out on how the majority of the models within the Victoria’s Secret show are all skinny and tall, upholding unrealistic and exclusive beauty standards. They feel that there should be more representation to make the runway more relatable to its viewers. This has led to a “new and improved,” 2024 runway show with various body shapes and sizes. However, despite this attempt at adding more body diversity, many are still dissatisfied with the show and its lack of plus-size models. This perspective highlights how, despite recent efforts to promote inclusivity, people still say there is a lack of body diversity on the runway. Ban Hass at Huck Magazine sums this up, writing, “If you want to empower people, you need to make them feel accepted, represented and welcome in a space where they have been historically excluded,” about Victoria’s Secret.
