The Wheatley Wildcat 2023-2024 Comeback: Adelphi Quill Awards

After 4 years, students from The Wildcat Newspaper Club made a comeback and attended the Adelphi Quill Awards ceremony on February 16. Every year, Adelphi University encourages student-run newspapers in Long Island schools to submit a couple of their articles, providing them with a chance to compete for recognition. This year’s articles were written between February 2023 and January 2024.

Article categories include:

  • Most Outstanding Newspaper (Printed or Online)
  • Most Outstanding Reporter
  • Best News Article
  • Best Feature Article
  • Best Sports Story or Column
  • Best Opinion Piece (Column or Editorial)
  • Best Visual (Photograph or Artwork)
  • Best Arts Review
  • Best Layout

Wheatley students who submitted their article(s) included:

  • Benjamin Friedrich (Senior)
  • Kayla Rogan (Senior)
  • Aribeth Gu (Junior)
  • Melissa Li (Junior)
  • Maryam Hassan (Sophomore)

Students enjoyed participating in a discussion with panelists representing Newsday, Adelphi University, and other local run newspapers. After the discussions regarding AI and the future of journalism, students received a tour of Adelphi University’s campus. Adelphi then provided participants with lunch and concluded the day with a presentation of awards.

Congratulations to Benjamin Friedrich and Aribeth Gu for receiving 2nd place in Best Arts Review for submitting The Wheatley Theatre Company: Alice in Wonderland! Also, congrats to Benjamin Friedrich for also being awarded 2nd place as Most Outstanding Reporter!

To all of the writers who attended the awards ceremony this year, congratulations! Your efforts to revive The Wildcat have not gone unnoticed, and we appreciate your dedication to journalism! The success of The Wildcat at the Quill Awards this year was far more than what we expected, and we are proud of our writers for their accomplishments! Keep up the great work, I hope that we can go back to Adelphi next year and win more categories!
