This winter, the Wheatley Varsity Girls Basketball tryouts were full of twenty-four hardworking and dedicated girls. The girls pushed through a tough week of conditioning and getting back into the swing of things before being split up to either Varsity or JV. This year’s varsity team is made up of young players who have big potential. With only four returning players, Juniors Sami Rothstein, Julia Braito, Cecilia Jozef, and Maritsa Kanes, the team has many fresh faces. Freshmen Alina Ali, Marcella Kanes, Iman Pirzada, Audrey LaMonica and Paula Gbenebitse made the team. Rounding out the roster are Sophomores Emma Blennau and Alex Horowitz and Nicole Hetzel is the only senior. The twelve girls are working hard to have a successful season, and it is showing. Their season started with a 40-35 victory in a non-league game against Friends Academy on Monday, December 4th. Since the win, the team has been focusing on practicing their plays and adding new ones, as well as improving their shooting and basketball IQ. With their great coach, Ms. Rogala, they all are looking forward to a great season filled with victory! Come out to support the Girls Varsity basketball team!
