Girls Varsity Soccer (the defending 2017 County Champions) had an amazing season played with strength and desire to perform. The team is made up of four seniors: Julia Braito, Cecelia Jozef, Ciara O’Brien, and Samantha Rothstein five juniors: Isabel Avila, Jackie Dunne, Katie Gold, Isabella Rios, and Rebecca Sparacio one Sophomore Brianna Werney, and four freshmen: Alex Ofsie, Caroline O’Brien, Jordyn Behar, and Lexi Burke. The team is led by Co-captains Julia Braito, Cecelia Jozef, Ciara O’Brien, and Samantha Rothstein.
This year the team played Carle Place in their first playoff game in order to advance to the County Finals. After defeating Carle Place by a score of 3-2, the team went on to play Cold Spring Harbor in the County Finals. This game was particularly exciting. Carle Place had a 1-0 lead in last three minutes of the second half of the game and then Samantha Rothstein headed the ball into the net. With the game tied at the end, the team went on to play the first five minute overtime period. Since the game was still tied after this period, the team went on to play another five-minute overtime. Then with one minute left in this overtime period, the Wheatley girls had the opportunity to take a free kick from the thirty-five yard line. Lexi Burke took an incredible free kick, driving the ball into the net and making it the winning goal of the game. With that, the team advanced to the Long Island Final game, where they played Mattituck in order to get a chance to play in the New York State High School Soccer Competition. On a beautiful Saturday, the team secured a 2-0 win against Mattituck, allowing them to reach their season goal: making it to the state competition.
This year the State Soccer Competition took place upstate in Cortland, New York. It came as a surprise when it began to snow on the drive up to Courtland. It snowed during the team’s state quarterfinal game on Saturday, making it the biggest obstacle the team faced while playing against the Chenango Forks. The snow came down so profusely that people were shoveling the sidelines while the game took place. The team fought hard but unfortunately lost 3-0. Thanks to the seniors for their leadership and guidance. We will miss you all next year! Congrats to the Wheatley Girls Varsity Soccer Team on an amazing season!
